Rising Phoenix Pilates

is a private Pilates studio nestled in the heart of NYC’s West Village. Sessions are taught by me–Debbie Troche–a classically trained instructor with nearly ten years of teaching experience. Over the years I have taken a special interest in surgery/injury recovery, chronic health issues, as well as the unique experiences we face as we age. I was most recently certified as a Functional Aging Specialist. But don’t worry, I can also kick the butt of the fittest folks out there!

The phoenix is a magical bird that dies by bursting into flames only to rise, reborn from its own ashes. This symbolism has always resonated with me. There are so many things that happen in our lives that can send our self care into a fiery spiral. How many times have you looked at the calendar and counted in weeks, months or even years the last time you worked out? I believe that every day holds the opportunity for us to rise from the ashes of our past and be reborn into our future well being. It’s never too late to start over and you’re never too old to try something you’ve never done before.

Why Rising Phoenix?

Why Work With Deb?

I began doing private sessions with Deb six months after having surgery to repair a hip labral tear and impingement. Deb fixed me! She got me back in alignment and focused on all of the tiniest bits of form to make sure I didn't overcompensate with the wrong muscles or hit a position through hypermobility rather than strength. The attention to detail that she has carried me through the final stages of rehabilitation and into a much better foundation in continuing my pilates practice.

For over a year I took pilates mat classes with Deb. When  she let us know that she was now doing private lessons on the reformer I immediately signed up for them. Knowing what an excellent and caring teacher she was, I knew that I was in good hands. Deb works on the problems that each individual has to alleviate the condition and pain. Her knowledge and caring makes it a very personal exercise program.

Deb is a wonderful teacher. Her knowledge of Pilates and physiology blends seamlessly with her quirky sense of humor and fun. Even when the workouts are challenging, her manner keeps them from being onerous. Following my two hip replacements, her thoughtful approach has helped me rebuild strength, flexibility and balance. I always look forward to my sessions, if only to see what socks she’s wearing!

Deb is a wonderful Pilates instructor. She is patient, very knowledgeable and skilled at tailoring sessions to each individual’s needs. Plus, she is super fun with a great sense of humor. I highly recommend her.

I’ve been working with Deb for 2 years and have seen my body strength and physique transform into something I didn’t know was possible. The best part is she makes it so fun I forget how hard it is until I’m sore the next day! No two sessions feel the same, she motivates me to work harder with creative pilates exercises and knows how to help me focus on the areas I want to improve. I’m thankful to have found a great (and cool!) instructor like Deb!

I'm fairly active for a middle-aged American but not an athlete by any means. In fact, I’m not all that ‘in touch’ with my body, and so for years I avoided learning Pilates because I thought it would be too hard for me. Training with Debbie has changed that; the work we do is slowly increasing my strength and my confidence. Her excellent cueing and relaxed, encouraging manner have replaced my fear of failing at Pilates with a genuine enthusiasm for this challenging but rewarding practice.

I have taken Pilates classes, and one-on-one training, for a number of years, at various studios, and with different teachers. I find Debbie Troche to be a gifted teacher; one who focuses on the student's distinguishing needs. I can attest to the visible improvement I have made during the course of her guidance.

Pilates is the only exercise other than tennis I have stuck with (kept up) over many years.  Deb, my Pilates instructor has kept me interested. When I think on a rotten day that I’ll Just curl up and stay home, I know that Deb has put together a plan for me for that day so I put on my gym pants and head to the studio.
